The best thing about meditation is that there are no rules. There’s no one to tell you what you should be doing, how you should be doing it, what you should be experiencing, or what you should get out of it. Meditation is a space for complete freedom. With that freedom, comes responsibility, though. Staying disciplined in your own meditation practice is important in trying to get the most of that freedom.
Like I said, there are no rules to meditation. While there are techniques that are widely used, they’re not required and no one is around to tell you if you’re doing them right or not anyway. The only person who is there to guide your meditation practice is yourself. You have complete control over what you put into your meditations which will determine what you receive from them. Just like in sports, arts, work, and life, the energy you put into it will determine what you get out. This is why it’s so important to be able to self-discipline.
In every day life, in our jobs and in school, we have teachers and bosses telling us what we’re doing right and wrong and making sure we’re being consistent and doing things their way. In meditation, you are your boss and your teacher. You get to determine what is right and what is wrong for you and what you want to gain. While you can meditate sporadically with no goals in mind if you please, you wouldn’t be fully taking advantage of the benefits that meditation can give you and the free space it places you in.
In meditation, it’s beneficial to set aside a time or schedule for yourself and to have an idea of what you are trying to accomplish, whether that’s to relax on a stressful day or help with your anxiety or to meet your spirit guide or anything else. Once you’re able to consistently take that time out every day or every other day or however often it may be, you’ll see a change. The more disciplined and consistent you become, the more you’ll see effects in your life. It’s just like exercising or eating healthy. The more you do it and the more consistent you become, the easier it gets, the stronger you become, and the more effects you see every day even outside of the activity itself.
The great thing about meditation is that while it requires discipline, it also teaches you discipline. The feeling of sitting in a space where you feel totally free and unbound and feel total mental clarity and understanding of yourself is an amazing one and it doesn’t end when your meditation is over. That mental clarity and understanding will stay with you even as you go about your day. The more you meditate to reach the state, the more you’ll learn that you can keep that sense of freeness outside of meditation. And if you haven’t yet reached that state of mind, it just means you need to practice more.
The more you meditate, the more your daily activities begin to mirror meditation. When I am consistently meditating and putting energy into it and focusing on it, I find that everyday activities become meditative as well. The mindset from my meditation stays with me longer when I use that same discipline and focus in my daily life. The hardest part of disciplining yourself in meditation (at least for me) is carrying that discipline over into your everyday life. I can sit alone and meditate and not allow myself to be distracted by outside noises or thoughts, but that’s harder to do when you’re writing a paper or driving a car.
The more you practice though, like any activity, the better you get at it. The more you practice that focus and discipline in meditation, the more you’ll feel the same focus and clarity outside of meditation.
